What are trigger points?

Trigger points are highly irritable localised spot of exquisite tenderness in a nodule or in a palpable taught band of muscle tissue. If sufficiently hypersensitive, gives rise to pain and tenderness in other areas of the body.

Causes of trigger points


• Stress

• Direct Injury


• Sudden strain or overload


• Repeated overload


• Prolonged immobility


• Excessive or unusual exercise


• Cold, damp or draughts


Travell describes trigger points without exaggeration as the “scourge of mankind.” They can develop in any muscle in any person at any age.
